Cypress Hill & London Symphony Orchestra Presents Black Sunday Live at The Royal Albert Hall

28 years on, the long running Simpsons gag comes true as hip-hop legends Cypress Hill play alongside the prestigious London Symphony Orchestra at the Iconic Royal Albert Hall.

Celebrating 30 years since the release of their seminal album Black Sunday – which sold over 4 million copies in the US alone and electrified audiences globally with its genre-bending crossover hits – they performed the entire album in full. Songs including I Wanna Get High, I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That and global hit Insane In The Brain are for the first time, accompanied by unique arrangements from the glorious 70-piece orchestra. With incredible visuals and captivating documentary moments, this nostalgic show sets a whole new standard for crossover, as Cypress Hill once again redefine the hip-hop genre and cement themselves as one of the most original global acts of their time.

Simon said… “How do you approach mixing a musical collaboration between one of the biggest hip-hop groups in the world and the esteemed London Symphony Orchestra? It starts by going to the venue, seeing what Ollie Nesham and his team at RedTX are capturing—discussing mic models and placements, walking the venue, and understanding the sound of the Royal Albert Hall. I listened to all 118 channels of audio being recorded into the truck and watched as the multi-cam feeds danced around the venue during the show. Translating all that data into a cinematic experience—one that mirrors what those lucky enough to see the Cypress Hill x LSO show live experienced—is no small task.

I put on my music mixer hat, my film mixer glasses, and brought all my tools to this one. I regenerated high-frequency vocal content to reduce cymbal bleed on every verse and chorus, dived into spectral editing to remove shrill whistles and acoustic resonances bouncing around the crowd mics, and layered in additional crowd sounds as Dolby Atmos objects to recreate the detailed, immersive energy of the audience.

I made full use of the speakers not accessible with the usual Dolby Atmos beds to create spatial clarity between each section of the orchestra. I de-essed brass swells that had too much bite in a theatrical mix system and used the location mic lists to map out the overhead and crowd mics as 3D Atmos objects, preserving the authentic reverb of the Royal Albert Hall while adding my own long tails to enhance certain choruses and vocal hooks.

I could talk all day about the adventure I went on here, and I put everything into it. I can’t wait for the world to hear it in the cinema!”
