Halo are back on the grid with another motorsport documentary, this time for Oxford Scientific Films.
‘Driven; The Billy Monger Story’ tells the remarkable story of Billy Monger, one of Britain’s most exciting young racing drivers, who last year at the age of just 17 was involved in a devastating crash, resulting in the loss of both of his legs. Incredibly, soon after his accident Billy resolved to get back to racing in the hope of becoming the first ever amputee to race competitively in a single-seater racing car. OSF secured exclusive access to document his return to racing after the horrific event at Donnington Park in 2017.
This film follows Billy and his family as he pursues his dream to one day race in Formula One. With the support of the racing community, Billy will have to change the rules of motorsport and learn to drive again without legs, whilst coming to terms with life as a disabled person. This inspirational story is about the incredible will of one young man and the extraordinary support his family provides during the toughest time of their lives.

The magic and beauty of this film is in its simplicity. There was no requirement for ‘big sound’ so it plays a totally supportive role in the story, underpinning the drama but rarely grabbing the limelight. There were lots of different source recordings, some good, some not so good, some archive, some grabbed at noisy locations – my job was to smooth it all out and focus on intelligibility and mood. The score is beautiful and gentle and pulled all the sound elements together nicely. I had eight people in the final mix late on a Friday night. It was a hugely creative and exciting atmosphere as the mix took shape, everyone engaging and contributing. This mix is a genuine team effort and is all the better for it. I love it.
